TWENTY8TWELVE by S.Miller

" Inspired by the African youth photography of Malick Sidibé, the collection captures the intensity of the melting cultural boundaries and landmark rebellions of 1950's Alabama; referencing the rejection of the cultural restraints imposed at the time. Early American industry is referenced throughout - the cotton pickers and roadside chain gangs of the Deep South in their worn, hard wearing denims and wide washed out stripes. A multi jumbled mix of printed silk and faded gauze is bleached, as if by the sun. The ‘Spacek stripe’ - inspired by the film ‘Badlands’, staring Sissy Spacek - documents the plight of a adolescent girl from South Dakota, on the run with her volatile boyfriend. Prints embody characteristics of abstract expressionist art - looking to the works of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Louise Bourgeois – and take on the spontaneity of the movement. "
